Anarchy in ashford?
When the news got out about patient zero and how virulent the virus was, my entire home town went into chaos, looting, rioting, The police trying to calm everyone down, even as the infected kept coming. I had to barricade my home up with my sofa and hope to god that my friend and I were not already doomed, hope everyone is doing better than us in the uk endcast folk's.
Something is wrong this week, and I hope it's not what I think it is.
I was listening to endcast when I heard some rumbling's after that ancient dead wolf was discovered in Russia, And when I heard and read what was going on, I had a sinking suspicion that something bad is going to happen, and I hope to everything that it is not what I think it is, because if so, then honestly, the globe might be in for a week, a year, or maybe the end of the world as we know it.
Whelp, it's the end, what caused it?
Well, it's the end of the world most likely, and I wonder what caused it? mutated rabies? the fungi what take's control of of a host's brain? Or is it something else? I do wonder what caused it, but as I look out here from my home in kent, I can only wonder? I hope everyone is doing well whever they are, and if anyone is alive, take as many precaution's as possible, and all wishes from the uk.
All flights grounded?
I hope I heard that wrong, if they cut service now, there will be so many people help up. Stuck in some airport, waiting who knows how long for the all clear to be given. But, what are we supposed to do? Leave, stay in a hotel only to have to come back in a few hours? Am I gonna have to pay again? Are they going to just empty all of the airports,& bags across the country? How would that even work?
Stirring where I stand.
Then the announcer began describing the scene out East. The vague yet unnerving reports of injuries, of families disrupted. As we thought to gather for this Thanksgiving Season, it seems there is something much more dire at hand. The news seems odd, lacking coordination, sketchy details. Like people are just falling of the face of the planet. Random attacks? Innocent victims. where are the police?
Stirrings out East?
The hush that fell over the crowd in the concourse of SEA INT at least 40 people stopped dead in their tracks. Once the announcer began with the words, 'We have serious news to report from the East coast.' At first, it was simply a few handfuls of folks relaxing, or tending to some mundane task. Handing juice boxes to eager children. Checking for the current weather report, completely normal.
They've started to close in
Something outside has changed. We hear the police shouting orders to prepare for hostile engagement. Then, several blocks away, we hear the deafening sound of dozens of guns firing simultaneously, mixed with screams of pain and terror. We hear the chaos getting closer. That means our side is losing. For what it's worth, my father and I are both armed-he has a 38 and I have a 44.
Fear
After the signal dies down, I finish checking everything. Im covered in grease, grime and dust. I won't describe the smell. I stay in the basement to avoid hearing the updates. I don't want to face the world right now. I fear failure, i fear rejection. I need to figure out how to get to Phoenix. Im exhausted. Someone upstairs is calling my name. Surprisingly, they do not sound upset or panicked.
Walmart, speakers and the admiral
People fumble with their keys. No one can drive. The infected forgot how and everyone else panicks. At the bunker we hear of Chris’s plan. Speakers are set up outside. I call the admiral. He sends a message to the entire US Navy, to heck with protocol. He’ll deal with the court martial later. He also calls Ft. AP Hill down the road. The army colonel does the same. All speakers on. Hope it works
Chicken
I explain that there are 4 of us and no oven. Something for the microwave is fine, pre roasted chicken. As we head to the door an admiral stops us. He says our actions saved his forces, their families, the base. He gives us each is his card and ask that I pass along his info to all. Will do on a secure channel. We head back to the bunker. Pandemonium at Walmart. Some are infected, others running.
We emerge
We emerge from the bunker and head to Walmart. The windows are smashed and employees can’t hold the crowd back. Looting on Thanksgiving Day. We head to Food Lion. The windows and doors are covered in black paint and cardboard. The crowd is rational, mostly. They see our Endcast badges, thank us profusely for the PSA and request autographs! The staff wants to give us a 35 pound turkey with fixin’s.
Sign-On / We're The Ones Who Live
Good morning. This is Cale Gruen for Endcast Radio, now signing on. Me and the two remaining technicians are at the Chicago studio. I don't yet know whether the signal had any effect on the infected. But regardless of the outcome, we're still here. And to the rest of Endcast and anyone else receiving this, you're also still here. Together, we'll rebuild and start anew. We're the ones who live.
It worked...maybe
It seems to be working....holy hell! it seems to be working...they are moving away. Some of them have dropped. I don't want to get my hopes up. At least we tried something. I down the last of my coffee as Grant and the others look out the windows. I slip out of the office and go check on the generators. I need to keep the station operational. We need to keep the signal going.I need more coffee too

Sign-Off / Goodnight, America (Part 1)
This is Cale Gruen in Chicago. There are only three of us left at the studio, myself and two technicians. The rest of the staff stopped coming in, and we don't know where they went. We fear the worst. At this time, the Endcast Chicago studio will be ceasing regular reports to participate in the signal plan attempt. I hope it works, but if we don't return later, you'll know why...
Radios outside
For this plan to work, we need to place radios outside to play the signal. I set up everything I have outside the headquarters building. We need everyone to do this to so the sound can be heard. Once everything is set up, Grant has me give the order on air, to everyone who has agreed to participate in this attempt. I sit at Grant's desk. 3...2...1...INITIATE! I close my eyes and flip the switch.
A night in the bunker
The bunker is cozy for 2, cramped for 4 and 2 dogs. I try to cook but this kitchen needs an upgrade. I ask what they need- new espresso maker and a microwave. Men. Some infected are outside. We didn’t cover the lights on the cameras. They are pushing random keys on the pad. Howard quickly changes the code to a binary one. Ron installs a pad on the inner door. No Outer Banks this year.
I must get Alli dog
Alli was left in the car. I’m going to get her, infection be damned. We see the march has stopped. Crone and I grab what we can from the car. The techs cut wires to outside lights. Back inside we see why the infected stopped. They are eating each other! Faces half eaten, arms gone, some are walking stubs that were legs. Maybe this is a way to slow them until Chris can get his idea perfected.
Thank Grant for the access codes and credentials
We head over the 301 bridge to Virginia. Navy patrol is lining the bridge shoulder to shoulder. Traffic is slow and it is getting late. Grant gave us the code to the Dahlgren bunker. It is one scary entrance, an old decrepit gas station. Ron and Howard are they but do not let us in the inner door for 1 hour. The bridge cam shows patrol firing on the infected, the infected that are drawn to blood.
Cold turkey
I never thought I'd spend Thanksgiving in my basement. I'm down here with my parents and we have a large bowl of mashed potatoes, a big pot of stuffing and a chocolate cake. Our turkey was the first casualty of the day-we had to leave it in the oven because the power went out and never came back on. We're making the best of the situation by listening to Christmas music on an old CD player.
Power has started to fail
I asked my parents to help me make Thanksgiving dinner to keep us busy and distracted. I haven't told them that every time I leave the kitchen I'm checking my phone for updates. My internet connection failed an hour ago, and the power has started to go out intermittently. It's time to start prepping the basement. I tell my parents to grab whatever food, water and supplies they can.
New normal
It's 9 am Thanksgiving day. My parents woke up a little bit ago. They probably wish they could sleep through this nightmare. For a while they just stared outside at the police cruisers and officers in riot gear patrolling the block. Didn't mention my close call last night. I turned on the TV but the only stations broadcasting are talking nonstop about the infection and the rising death toll.
Home sweet home?
I'm back home after almost getting arrested for violating the shelter in place order. My parents are sound asleep in the guest room, oblivious to the chaos outside. They'll see for themselves when they wake up in the morning to police vehicles patrolling the neighborhood, playing a recorded message telling everyone to stay where they are until further notice.
One Last Early Gift
Rick, I almost forgot about your early Christmas gift. I bought you a set of old British Hong Kong coins. I believe your studio received the gift a few days ago, shortly before the outbreak started. I had a feeling I was forgetting someone earlier, and I apologize.
37 minutes
Diane in Iowa. The ER is all PPE and restraints. Exposed patients are strapped down because some turned without warning and attacked staff. Minutes since exposure are written across each gown in black marker. Then I recognize one of our nurses, restrained like the others. 37 MIN across her chest. She sees me. Says my name. I pull on my PPE and try not to wonder how many minutes she has left.
Apology
Lily, in case I don't survive and my plan fails, I want you to know how sorry I am for Shanghai. I truly believed I was doing something right. I'm sorry I never called you after. I figured you wouldn't want anything to do with me. I know i have blood on my hands despite what Grant says. I know they were your friends. I'm still here with an open line for you if you need anything fixed.
Thank you
Cale, my brother, thank you for trusting me and forgiving me, even when I cannot forgive myself. I hope this plan works too. I still have the scarf. I keep it in my tool box these days. Please stay safe. We need to get Grant a sparkling purple couch for his office when this is over and you need to visit the new Phoenix Station. I'll make sure there is plenty of ice water and coffee.
Early Christmas Gifts (Part 2)
Grant received a new coffee mug, Alistair received a new set of drinking glasses, Anderson received a Nigerian flag pendant, Elias received a book on the history of the stock market, and Hank received a portable weather radio. If we get through this alive, then gifts for my fellow operators will be sent in December. I hope you like them. I'm not very good at guessing what people want as gifts.
PSA #2- (#1 cut off short)
Black out windows: cardboard, tarp, blankets. Turn off anything that emits light of any color at any brightness. The virus has induced violence but has also dulled higher brain function. The infected will bash in windows but can’t figure out how to turn a doorknob. Stay in an interior room/closet and lock the door if possible. Godspeed.
